Yesterday, in a pinch I tried a 26 inch tube in a 700X35 tire. Seems to work OK. anyone aware of any downside to this approach?

Hello, it seems you are off by an inch. The tire would be a 27".

I do not think you will have any immediate problems but if you do any competitive use of the bike, I would correct this.
