I try to clean for a couple of reasons. First my wife is a clean freak about our new mini-van. And secondly it, helps my bike rude better. I just keep a rag and cleaning solvant in a old plastic grocery bag. It only takes five to ten minutes.

I would not be too "anal" about it, but a clean bike dies run better simply because there is less gunk to screw up the parts. That said, a simle post-ride wipe down with a damp cloth is about all you need (unless you have been riding in the rain - in which case a mild soap solution and light chain relube is ususally adequate).
